A Charge to Heads of Households
August 16, 2009
The elders at Katy Bible Church have a desire to see all of our dads, and our husbands - all of our heads of households, recommit to being all that God desires them to be in their role as the spiritual heads in their homes.
Our elder meetings over the last several months have been focused on how we, as elders and deacons of this local body of believers, can help to better equip you. The messages from the pulpit here on Sunday mornings during this month of August from Scot and Ron, along with the follow-up meetings in the evenings, are one way we are trying to communicate these biblically-based truths.
Today we will be announcing our two new adult Sunday school classes, both of which will further emphasize the ideas that we would like to impart to you. But know this: Placing Christ at the center of all that we do here is our cornerstone - everything else should flow from that foundation.
Another way that we plan to come alongside each of you heads of households is in the area of mentoring. Our goal here is to team up, as elders and deacons, with each of you. We want to come alongside you to encourage, equip and challenge each of you to be all that God intends you to be in the very important role that He has given to you. We don't have all of the specifics worked out on this yet, but we want to encourage you to lead your family in worship, in discipling your family members, and in having daily bible reading and devotions with your family.
We don't intend for this to just be another "program". Programs can come and go. Instead, we sincerely desire to see this become a natural and normal way for us to help you succeed in the most important role that you will ever have in this life. No other job or position, no matter how lofty or seemingly important from a worldly perspective, can compare to this one that God has called you to.
Also, we don't want any program here at KBC to compete with you as the spiritual leaders in your homes. We only want to supplement what you are doing (or should be doing) in your homes. There is nothing wrong with our having Sunday school for youngsters & teenagers, and nothing wrong with having AWANAS. But what would be wrong is if heads of households see these programs as an alternate method of discipling their family members and so neglect what they should be doing in their own homes.
We would prayerfully ask each of you to consider this call for a recommitment of laying down your lives for your families; to lay aside the sometimes selfish interests that we all have from time to time that get in the way of carrying out our biblically-based roles.
You've probably heard before that there are only 2 things that will last into eternity in heaven: God's Word and the souls of believers. Being disciplers of our own family members is a goal that should inspire all of us. But you know - we are all human, with our old sin natures that sometimes keep us from doing the things that we know we should do. As I tell our youngsters in our Sunday school class from time to time, we are nothing more than a bunch of "dirty rotten little sinners"!! But I also point out that we can be "cleaned up" on the inside by the blood of the lamb, Jesus Christ, and then we can be used by God to do great things.
As elders, we can be successful at balancing the budget, keeping up the facilities, providing meals for our fellowship times, etc. But we also know that we have a higher calling: that one day we will have to answer for the souls under our care here at KBC. We do not take this charge lightly, and we will continue to strive to do all that we can, with the Holy Spirit's power and leading, to encourage the heads of households to fulfill their God-given, God-inspired, and God-empowered roles.
