The Incomparable Depth of Our Assurance

A Summary of the Katy Bible Sermon “Blessed Assurance Pt. 5”, preached by Matt Mancini on May 2nd, 2026.
“Having been justified by faith.” These five words from Romans 5 are the hinge upon which our eternity swings. As we’ve walked through this passage together, we’ve seen that being right with God is not merely a legal status; it’s a fountain of confidence that never runs dry. While we often wrestle with doubt or feel the weight of our own failures throughout the week, Paul sets before us a series of “blessed assurances” meant to anchor our souls.
Of all the promises in this text, perhaps the most profound is this: the love of God is yours. Not as a vague sentiment, but as a divine reality poured out within your heart through the Holy Spirit.
When the Bible says this love is "poured out," it isn't describing a slow leak or a rationed trickle. It is a flood. A tidal wave. Like a cooler of Gatorade dumped on a coach after a championship win—an overflowing, unrestrained gift. In justification, God gives us nothing less than Himself. And the greatest expression of love is always self-giving.
Love Against a Dark Backdrop
The wonder of this love shines brightest when set against the backdrop of our lives before Christ. Modern culture often implies or even explicitly tells us “we are enough” or that God loves us because we are inherently lovely. But the Bible offers a picture that is less complementary at first, but ultimately lays the foundation for a much more secure hope. It tells us that God loved us when we were helpless, ungodly, sinners, and enemies.
Human love - to whatever degree - is almost always predicated on loveliness in the other person. But God loved you when there was nothing lovely in you at all. He didn't love you because you were impressive; He loved you because He is gracious. This is why the theologian Karl Barth, when asked for his most profound thought, simply replied: “Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so.”
If God loved you at your absolute worst—when you were still His enemy—you can be invincibly sure that He will not stop loving you now that you are His child. As Paul argues, what we didn’t earn, we cannot lose.
The Logic of Our Security
This leads us to a "lesser-to-greater" logic that should steady your hearts and give you immense peace this week. If God has already done the "harder" thing—reconciling you to Himself through the death of His Son while you were still an enemy—how much more will He do the "easier" thing of keeping you now that you are justified?
From our perspective, it was seemingly impossible for the eternal, life-giving God to die. Yet Jesus took on flesh to bear your debt. Having already accomplished that, we can trust Him to complete what He began. We are not only reconciled by His death; we are saved by His life.
Exulting in the Benefactor
All these assurances lead us to a place of exultation in God Himself. We don't just rejoice in the benefits (peace, grace, glory); we boast in the Benefactor.
For instance, we exult in His wisdom, which made a way to save us without compromising His justice. We exult in His immutability—His unchangeableness—knowing that the same love that rescued us will never be taken away. And we exult in many other attributes of God upon which our security and assurance is built.
Putting Assurance to Work
As you head into your week, how do you apply these truths?
Take comfort: Let these assurances move you to grateful worship rather than dejection.
Remind each other: When you see a brother or sister discouraged by failure, remind them they stand in grace.
Love the lost: Remember that the people you meet this week lack these assurances. They are living in dread of a judgment they cannot avoid on their own. Share the Gospel with them, loving them with the same "stick-your-neck-out" love that God showed you when you were still a sinner.
You are loved with a love like no other. Rest in that today.
